Lines Written in Response to My Wounded Dog at the Vet’s

Canine puzzlement
Gazes out from deep, brown eyes
Pain forms a question.
My voice in her ears
Words she understands dimly,
Whose intent she knows.
Reassurance grows
Amidst these entangled threads
Perplexed eyes soften.
Love is absolute
Days wheel around her and me,
With her at my heels.
My dog’s trust humbles
I am sworn to keep her safe
Confusion, begone!

Gathering
©September 17th, 2016
By Vijaya Sundaram
We sit side by side
Friends all, gathering bright words
Eating cool night air.
The moon weaves her spell
And our attention wanders
Everything listens.
This is illusion
Togetherness passes on.
Solitude awaits.

Air swirls around neck
A thousand flowers turn sunward
Shiver brightens spine.

Eyes Spy
©August 19th, 2016
By Vijaya Sundaram
A curtain comes down.
Windows to the soul, well, yes –
I see closed windows.
And what will it take
To throw wide those blind shutters?
A drowned child’s closed eyes?
J’accuse say these eyes:
A child in an ambulance
Looking out at us.
Somewhere, their eyes close.
Choosing not to see, helpless,
We open ours, weep.

She reached for the stars
But got a handful of dirt.
In every grain, Life.

Sanctuary
©July 25th, 2016
By Vijaya Sundaram
This is my refuge.
And in our intertwined lives,
I’ve found sanctuary.
There are some storms, yes,
And gusts of wind, pouring rain –
So much grows after!
A garden of peace –
A quiet place of wonder –
Sweet music wafts through.
Here are dreams and songs
Kindness ripples around rocks.
Graceful trees abound.
When the world grows stale
I retreat to my refuge.
Moonlight grows bright here.
Is gratitude parched?
Mine drinks deep from rippling streams.
I come home to you.

Masks bloom everywhere
Smiling, chilling, leering fronts
Where are you, truly?
See that tranquil scene?
Beneath that lake lies a beast.
Take care where you swim.
Clean and bright and fresh
Building smiles at everyone.
Watch out for that step!

Blue on Black
©July 7th, 2016
By Vijaya Sundaram
A shot – and we know.
Blue on black crime, cops go free
Mourn this dying land.
Where can sorrow go?
Form a bridge from here to there.
Get people across.
Where can anger flow?
The stony path zigzags steep –
Cut a grove through it!
Where does darkness show?
In leaden hearts carved from hate
KKK-Police.
Where can justice grow
In barren land that’s so hard?
Time to plant some trees.

In response to The Daily Post’s Daily Prompt: Mask
Masked-Love
©April 27th, 2016
By Vijaya Sundaram
If you wear a mask
As the moon wears a soft cloud
Is it to shine less?
Better to shine less
Than to have all look upwards
This way, I can rest.
Why do you hide thus?
To behold your mind is joy:
All are bathed in light.
None need come find me
I shall flood the night with light
But hide behind clouds.
When I glimpse the truth,
And you drift away from me
I’m bereft, forlorn.
Though I may cause joy,
Like mist, my mask protects us
Seeker, leave me be!

In response to The Daily Post’s Daily Prompt: Crossroads
When the Crossroads Come – 14 Senryu
(An Offering to Hecate)
©April27th, 2016
By Vijaya Sundaram
When the crossroads come
And you’re standing still, so still
Let them pass, softly.
When the crossroads come
And you see Her there, bow down.
Ask her for a gift.
Watch the clouds flow by.
The moon hides her pale, wan face.
Darkly, stars shiver.
Look into my past!
Guide me to my destiny
Help me choose it well.
Offer her your hand
Offer her your heart in trust
Bow to her wisdom.
She will study you.
She’ll gaze into your future
With a cryptic look.
Look into my past!
Guide me to my destiny
Help me choose it well.
And when the stars hide,
When a low moon wails so pale
She will decree it.
Thank her with a gift
Ask for your life in return
You have much to do.
Look into my past!
Guide me to my destiny
Help me choose it well!
Her pole-cat will sing,
Her wolf-dog, in warning, howl.
She’ll see your future.
And she’ll sigh softly
There are things she cannot change,
Though she’ll try to bend.
Look into my past!
Guide me to my destiny
Help me choose it well.
So, when crossroads come
Stand so still, and tall until
They fade into mist.
