Snow lies thick on trees
Moonlight thickens into milk
Darkness treads lightly.

Daily-ness clings on
A shrug cannot shake things off
Fall into breathing.

Today was a rose.
Now turns to fast-fading Then
Petals folding shut.

The day spirals down.
A singularity waits.
Beyond that, sweet sleep.

A leaf flutters down
The air quivers and falls still,
So, too, a lone thought.

Restless, the dog sniffs
In quiet anticipation.
Things change, stay the same.

Seasons come early.
How to travel this cold world,
Standing still, moving?

We come, play our parts.
Heave a sigh, leave, and go home,
Relieved, for it’s done.

Even love must go
There is no eternity.
The tree drops her leaves.

Her leaves feed the soil
The tree grows again, always.
One day, lightning strikes.

Sing of this, and more.
Music swirls in the blind dark.
Spear the howling winds.

It isn’t easy.
I want to be gentle rain.
Alas! A downpour!

At times, rainbows form
Alas, too quickly, vanish.
Thunderclouds again.
……
Aspire to one’s self
Sitting there atop a cliff
Climb carefully up.

Catch yourself falling,
Here a branch, there a small shrub,
Climb the cliff again.
……
Existence is clouds
Gathering around one’s feet,
One’s head in the sky.

Below, nimbuses
Above, nebulae and suns
Wait! I’m upside down!

Dampnation

Dampnation

Pearl-gray skies drop down.
See a world saying goodbye.
Layers peel away.

It is always thus.
Rain-dark afternoons beat wings
Yearning for lift-off.

Lift-off cannot be
With damp thinking in damp skies
Fold your wings. Go home.

Birds fly south by rote
A route forged and forced by time –

Still, we find meaning.

And in those meanings
We etch those pathways in gold,
And the air quivers.

It matters not that
Life is leaves whirling in dust –
There’s strange beauty there.

It matters little
If we’re remembered, or not –
Our ghosts’ echoes ring.

Work, play, love and lust
Beat their futile wings against
Unseen glass.  Just laugh.

Green rain sliding down
Invisible ropes of light.
Clouds huddle, sullen.

Large fir tree shivers
Loudly sings the chickadee
Blue sky turns leaden.

Gray clouds lowering
Lilacs bend  their purple heads
Tulips sound out light.

Blue-gray dog sleeping
Cushioned in softest music
Mouse peers out, bright-eyed.

New next-door dogs speak
Greetings reach the dog at home
Clamor splits the air.

Dish-pile accuses
Sluggish body coddles guilt
Arise to answer.

Give to Life

Give to Life

It’s winter, and still
My stunted carrots struggle on
Clinging to life and rich earth.

A rose, white and wan
Wafts her gentle, cool perfume
While December frowns.

A single chilli
Holds on to a still-green plant
Promising a fight.

Burying her snout
In cold, wet soil, my dog breathes
Life into my life.

I cannot forget.
I cannot sit in the dark.
I must give to life.

Air swirls around neck
A thousand flowers turn sunward
Shiver brightens spine.
