You turn and you turn
And you turn and you turn
And you burn, and you burn
And you burn, and you burn
And we’ll never learn,
Never learn, never learn,
How much you gave us.

And you spin, and you spin,
And you spin, and you spin,
The light grows dim
As we try to swim
While the air gets thin
It goes out, not in,
We cannot save us.

Breathe, breathe, breathe
Breathe, breathe, breathe
Find your way into a tree
Dig your feet into the dirt
And eat the sun for lunch.
Eat the sun for lunch.

Or fly, fly, fly, fly
Fly away, fly away
Aim like an arrow
Right into the sky
Become a particle
Or a wave.
Moon-Being – An Original Song

In 1994, I wrote and composed many songs, and recorded them with my musician colleagues and friends in Pune, India, in a creative, musical burst of energy I am yet to recapture.

I look back and think:  Did I actually do that much music, and compose so much?  For those  who think that writing songs is easy, I’m sorry to disillusion you.  Perhaps, some songs are easy, but to write complex songs, and arrange instrumentation for them is not something you do in the blink of an eye.  And yet, like writing poetry or fiction, the more I did it, the smoother it flowed.  That was one of the most creative periods of my entire life, and I always grateful to have had it.

This song is another favorite myth of mine, the myth of Icarus.  I’ve always been haunted by his story, and in this song, he makes it to the other side.  He, named after the Cretan moon-goddess, is drawn to the sun.  The song is set up as a dialogue between Icarus and the Sun-Beings.

The song is in several time-feels.  See if you can figure them out, if you are so inclined.

Bird Over the Water – An Original Song

In 1994, I wrote several songs, composed the music for them, including my guitar parts, and recorded them in the city of Pune, India.  Here’s one which I wrote a few years before that, but recorded in 1994.  It’s about Daedalus, the great labyrinth-maker and artist.  It’s also about taking the middle path.  I titled it “Bird Over the Water” (Music and Words©Vijaya Sundaram, 1994)

Little Straw Folk

Here is a song I wrote (and for which I composed the music and supporting parts, except the improvisational sections) in 1992, and sang and recorded in 1993.  It’s a story, as many of my songs are.  Hope you like it.
