May 6, 2016 Original Songs
In 1994, I wrote and composed many songs, and recorded them with my musician colleagues and friends in Pune, India, in a creative, musical burst of energy I am yet to recapture.
I look back and think: Did I actually do that much music, and compose so much? For those who think that writing songs is easy, I’m sorry to disillusion you. Perhaps, some songs are easy, but to write complex songs, and arrange instrumentation for them is not something you do in the blink of an eye. And yet, like writing poetry or fiction, the more I did it, the smoother it flowed. That was one of the most creative periods of my entire life, and I always grateful to have had it.
This song is another favorite myth of mine, the myth of Icarus. I’ve always been haunted by his story, and in this song, he makes it to the other side. He, named after the Cretan moon-goddess, is drawn to the sun. The song is set up as a dialogue between Icarus and the Sun-Beings.
The song is in several time-feels. See if you can figure them out, if you are so inclined.
